Beam Addresses and their functions - please see my quick reference table at the foot of this page for a quick overview of address types and their related fees.

REGULAR ADDRESS OR SBBS ADDRESS?

The various iterations of the Beam Wallet addresses are for different purposes and offer differing levels of privacy in your finances. We’ll start on the two most easily accessible address types.

To observe these two different address types, click : RECEIVE in your wallet.

Note, with the regular address mechanism as standard, it is the SENDER of a transaction who must determine the mechanism of the transaction – this can be an online transaction (where the receiver must be online to receive the Beams) or offline transaction (where the receiver can collect the coins in an offline way, without the need to be online at the point of transacting.)

On this initial receive screen, you can obtain a regular address, which is compatible with both online or offline transactions. This address is made up of up to 500 totally random characters, however, this length of address may not be compatible with a small selection of 3rd party platforms. Usually, the platform you use will show a valid or invalid message when you paste this address into their platform portal or website.

You can copy the address from this screen and paste it wherever you wish. Or you can delve further by clicking “Address details”.

After you click the Address details link, you will then see within a new small window which appears, another type of address. This one is a shorter address for databases which are incompatible with a longer address string. This is an online-only SBBS address.

BASIC PRIVACY LEVEL

These two address types are fully private and will obfuscate your financial data away from public viewing. All transactional records and addresses are held only within your own wallet, and you can – for audit purposes, export the transactional data as a spreadsheet. Giving you the power to enable or disallow any third party the right to see your financial history with Beam.

PUBLIC OFFLINE ADDRESS

The Beam Public Offline address is an address type which you can use for such things like online donations, or mining. It is an offline address so you do not need to be online at the time of a transaction, to receive your Beams. This address type provides a lesser privacy than the standard or SBBS and coins moved through a Public Offline Address are not fully private.

MAXIMUM PRIVACY ADDRESSES (LELANTUS-MW)

Previously, I explained to you that with regular Beam addresses, it is the SENDER who specifies if they send you coins using the online, or offline methods. With Beam Maximum Privacy, utilising Lelantus-MW, you control your own privacy and this address type, which uses a fully offline method to send and receive Beam, will require you to have some minimal knowledge in the shielded pool, where your Beams will mix. Read more on this below…

In your RECEIVE screen, switch the tab under ADVANCED to Maximum anonymity set.

The amount of time which you allow your offline coins to mix in the massive 64000 Beam shielded pool anonymity set, which then brings your coins to the wallet in a totally offline way, unliked from all previous transactional data, depends on how you specify your own settings for this. Your options here will be : no limit, 72hrs, 60hrs, 48hrs, 36hrs or 24hrs.

To find this setting, please navigate to the SETTINGS tab > PRIVACY. The section is shown below.

NOTE: whatever time limit you set in the ‘Longest transaction time for maximum anonymity’ will be the time your received coins will stay locked in the shielded pool, mixing with other transactional outputs, before being released to your wallet as usable / spendable coins.

So please consider how long you are prepare to wait, to have your coins usable, when using this method.

MAX ANON / REGULAR ADDRESS OFFLINE METHODS IMPORTANT NOTE

MAXIMUM ANONYMITY ADDRESSES AND OFFLINE REGULAR ADDRESSES WORK USING A VOUCHER SYSTEM. EACH ADDRESS HAS THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE UP TO 10 (TEN) TRANSACTIONS.

SO: WHEN USING MAX PRIVACY OR REGULAR OFFLINE ADDRESSES, DO NOT GIVE MORE THAN ONE SENDER, THE SAME ADDRESS TO UTILISE.

FOR THIS PURPOSE, A NEW ADDRESS WILL BE GENERATED EACH TIME YOU CLICK RECEIVE.

ADDRESS TYPE QUICK REFERENCE

REGULAR ADDRESS

ONLINE or OFFLINE TX (Sender specifies). For most day-to-day use of Beam, the regular address is lengthy, but will service most use cases. Exchanges and Mining Pools (which allow the long database string) and general P2P transactions should use REGULAR ADDRESS. Please ensure the sending party can service this method before requesting coins from them.

OFFLINE TX (with lesser privacy) Use this type of address for website donations or transactions which you don’t mind being partially traceable by the sending party. Also a good format for Mining Pools (as long as they allow the larger fee for this type of transaction – ask your pool if they support this.
